3 Ways To Remove Mold & Mildew From My Bathroom Ceiling in Salisbury, MD & Ocean Pines, MD.

Chemicals & Primers (Always protect your skin and lungs with gloves and proper respirators)

1. If your still at the point of surface mold/mildew and it has not penetrated into the gypsum board then you will need to clean the surface.

Bleach is a popular and effective way to kill the mold/mildew. Other things you can use are ammonia, borax, vinegar, and tea tree oil among others. Letting the product dwell for a minute or 2 is a good idea so the mold/mildew receives a good butt kicking.

Wipe and rinse well with clean water. Let the area dry overnight or use air movers with proper ventilation.

2. Apply a high quality solvent based stain blocking primer to the affected area. I recommend a solvent based primer because you may need to be blocking water stains as well.

3. Once the primer is allowed to dry for the required recoat time, apply a mildew inhibiting paint or add a mildew inhibiting additive to your selected paint.

Use a Mold Killing Primer

Zinsser Mold Killing Primer is a water based fungicidal protective coating that can be used

to paint over all existing mold, mildew, moss, fungi, odor causing bacteria and any other fungal organisms.

1. If the surface is heavily soiled and has slime, overgrowth, or has loose material you must pre-clean the area first. Use a mild detergent and water to wipe the area down. Let dry.

2. Apply Zinsser Mold Killing Primer to affect area and allow to dry for 1 hour. If water stains show through, you will need to apply an Oil-based Stain Blocking Primer, such as Zinsser Cover-Stain or Sherwin-Williams Problock.

3. Once the primer is allowed to dry for the required recoat time, apply a mildew inhibiting paint or add a mildew inhibiting additive to your selected paint.

Replace the Drywall

1. Remove the affected drywall from stud to stud so when you install the new piece it will have something to be firmly attached to.

2. Install the new drywall and attach with drywall screws, be sure to countersink you screws a little.

3. Apply joint tape to all joints and apply 3 coats of joint compound to all joints and screws.

4. Sand, prime and paint with your mildew inhibiting paint.
