Where can I throw away my old paint (and more) in Wicomico and Worcester Counties, Maryland?

It's that time of year when we need to go through our hazardous wastes and properly dispose of them. Wicomico County, MD and Worcester County, MD will be holding their Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day very soon and you need to be ready for it. Worcester also has E-Cycling for any electronics you may no longer use.

- Wicomico's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 7am-3pm at the Newland Park Landfill located at 6948 Brick Kiln Road, Salisbury, MD 21801. Phone # is (410) 548-4935. Valid ID is required.

- Worcester's Household Hazardous Waste and E-Cycling Collection Day is on Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 10am-2pm at the Showell Elementary School parking lot located at 11318 Showell School Road, Berlin, MD 21811. For questions contact recycling manager Ron Taylor at (410) 632-3177. Valid ID is required.

Hazardous waste items are things such as:

  • Gasoline, gas/oil mixes

  • Oil based paints, solvents, paint removal products, wood preservatives

  • Acids, bleach, ammonia, pool chemicals

  • Pesticides, insecticides, herbacides

  • Batteries

Electronic items are things such as:

  • Computers, moniters, keyboards, printers

  • TV's, VCR's, DVD players

According to Maryland Department of the Environment:

"Maryland does not regulate HHW as hazardous waste and Federal law allows for the disposal of HHW in household trash. However, due to the potential of HHW to cause physical injury, contaminate septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems, and present hazards to children and pets, MDE recommends the proper recycling/disposal of HHW materials at local HHW collection programs."

So let's do our part and be responsible with our waste. Our children will thank us.

If you have latex paint that you need to dispose of, you will need to solidfy it before putting it in the trash. Solidifying can be done with dirt, mulch, kitty litter, or you can purchase packets specifically made for paint hardening, which can be found in most Home Depot/Lowe's/Walmart locations.
